I recently had the pleasure of attending the Kay Brother's Winery Cellar Door. The setting is stunning with views over McClaren Vale hills and a nicely appointed tasting room.
We were greeted by the extremely friendly staff member who sat us down to an empty cellar door tasting room. The cellar door has provisions for children and the staff were keen to accommodate this, in a clear effort to enhance our tasting experience.
Kay Brother's offer a tasting flight model, offering a curated selection of their wines (essentially entry level, higher end or a mix angled towards grape varieties). Each flight typically included 5 wines.
Tasting pours were generous.
Their wines speak for themselves, they are delicious, arguably some of the best fuller-bodied McClaren vale reds I have tasted in quite some time.
We ended up purchasing wines - where we were very quickly offered members cellar door prices for our purchase, and also offered additional tastings of other wines not listed in our selected flight.
The tasting flight fee was, however, non-refundable on purchase and was required prior to attendance via an online booking service.
This is an extremely friendly winery with a delicious range of wines on offer. It does however, lose a star due to their decision to host a wine flight tasting model and do not offer a refund of tasting fee on purchase (as outlined below).
I am highly adverse to the emerging trend of wine flights as tasting models for SA Wineries - these railroad you into tasting a narrow selection of wines on offer, are frequently inflexible, convey a degree of pretentiousness about the brand and add additional expense to the 'experience'. I have no objection to tasting fees, however strongly feel these should be refunded in full with purchase of wine from the cellar door (with or without minimal spend).
