The vineyard and winery established in 1986 by Murray Smith. The pioneering unirrigated vineyard is situated with the ideal combination of climate, soil and aspect on the northern slopes of Mt Canobolas to create distinctive long-lived wines.
Canobolas-Smith Wines is one of the oldest and most significant Orange producers of premium cool-climate wines, Shine Reserve Chardonnay and Alchemy Cabernet Blend, two of the best wines in the district.
Canobolas-Smith takes an artisanal approach to wine-making. All fruit is hand-picked in small batches at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted. Great care is taken to allow the wines to reflect both the vineyard and the season whilst maintaining a certain "house style". Only the finest French oak is used during maturation, and flavour is retained as much as possible through minimal use of fining and filtration.
Many styles are produced under the Canobolas-Smith label, including Barrel-fermented Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Blends, spicy cool-climate Shiraz, elegant Pinot Noir plus occasional vintages of Methode Champenoise Sparkling and Rose.

Vineyard on the smaller scale compared to the others in the area but you'd get a more intimate experience. The pinot noir is an easy drink and Graham (? - we never formally got his name) was great and there were lengthy intriguing conversations to have over a glass of delicious wines. It's the "unique" wine tasting experience that we city-siders strive for.

Some seriously good wines. I'm not a Chardonnay fan but really liked theirs. Merlot Cab Franc was beautiful. Highly recommend.

Such a lovely range, and great chat with Murray, learned so much about wines in this area. Bought some Alchemy, Rosebud and Butterscotch Chardonnay, yum!
