Charnwood Food & Wine

Church St, Mudgee NSW 2850

Charnwood Wines in Mudgee is a small player kicking big goals with its Shiraz and Merlot. As small and boutique as wineries come, Charnwood demanded everyone's attention when its 2009 Charlie's Row Merlot won against some higher profile wineries in the 2011 Winewise Championship.

Charnwood Wines is located in the Mudgee wine region of NSW; located on a historic property just five minutes from the centre of Mudgee and nestled at the foot of the hills in the delightful Cudgegong Valley.

At Charnwood, they specialise in red wines and are particularly proud of their Shiraz which keeps going from strength to strength.

A very disappointing experience. Food was served cold & when staff was approached, they offered to warm up in microwave....not the same to which they agreed. They offered a free round of drinks but didn't offer the meals to be discounted. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone & will never attempt to dine there again. Very unwelcoming atmosphere by staff.

I'm perplexed at just how this restaurant is currently rated at 4.2 stars. We should have run for the hills on arrival on seeing the restaurant half empty (where it's hard to get a booking for any restaurant in Mudgee), and on seeing two tables about to leave with their plates half full. We stayed out of politeness, and we ordered the chicken schnitzel and crumbed lamb cutlets. The chicken schnitzel was inedible due to being the consistency of cardboard and the lamb crumb was thick, greasy and stale. We left our plates half full like the other tables we'd seen. The restaurant is very dated too, but I could look past that if the food was half decent. The reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because the two waitresses that served us were polite, cheerful and attentive. I don't usually give negative reviews, but honestly some effort needs to go into cooking some decent food. Would not recommend.

On arrival, we were surprised to find this was a motel restaurant, not a stand alone restaurant. We waited for 2 hours and 15 minutes for our meals to arrive, at least 3 other parties who arrived after us were served, ate, and left before we received our food. Had to ask constantly for drinks and updates on food. Most of the meals were good, the lamb cutlets must have been dipped in a deep dryer, meat was over cooked (dark brown rather than golden) yet the bones were still very cold.

As my Mother was visiting from Queensland I decided to take her to the only place in Mudgee that serve fresh seafood once a month, direct from New Castle. Not only was the meal delicious but the wait staff were outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble and a vast knowledge of the wine list. Thank you Charnwood for a memorable night, which my Mum still raves about.
