Capercaillie Wines was established in the Hunter Valley by Alasdair Sutherland in late 1995 when he built a small modern winery on an excellent 20 year old vineyard.
Alasdair was a Scot, his heritage is reflected in the very name 'Capercaillie'. It is the Gaelic name given to the black woodlands grouse, native to the pine forests of Scotland.
In the 20 plus years since the winery was established, Capercaillie has built a firm customer base in domestic and export markets and has gained a reputation as a quality producer with many award winning wines.
To enhance the already extensive range of individual Hunter Valley wines, Capercaillie has chosen select parcels of grapes from other proven regions of Australia, creating exciting multi-area blends which highlight climatic and varietal differences.

The staff are top notch here, they really put themselves in their own Category for Hunter Valley hospitality. The wine is generally pretty delicious most places here but to have fantastic service makes all the difference to me.
I will happily come back just for the service from the staff, the wine and cheese is a bonus. Compliments to Emily, nailed it :-)

Had a wonderful tasting with Emily and absolutely recommended stopping here whilst in the hunter!
We wanted to try some new vineyards so just pulled in here, Emily was so accommodating and went through a great tasting with us. We left with a few bottles and will definitely be back!

Best winery we have visited, we were so welcomed, friendly staff and the guy who works there (sorry forgot the name) knows so much knowledge about the wines. We were even complemented with a cheese platter. I'm not a Chardonnay drinker,but jees, after tasting their 2019 Chardonnay... the best wine... will definitely go back again..

Had a fantastic time. Friendly and welcoming, knowledgeable and courteous. Really loved it and bought a lot of their wines. My wife and I had a six months baby, they accommodated us, offered a table. Unforgettable experience!
